The Supended---arm Great Wall stretches along the eastern slope of Heishan which is on the norther side of the Shiguan Gorge around 8 kilometers to the north of the Jiayuguan Pass.It is part of the whole bulwark for military defence at Jiayuguan.Put up in 1539,the 18th year under the reign of Jiajing of the Ming Dynasty the original section of the Great Wall stretched 1.5 kilometers which was built of stone slates with earth.Of he remaining part of some 750 meters a section of about 231 meters built of rammed yellow earth is crawling along a slope of 150 meters high.It looks so steep at an angle of 45 gerees as though it were an iron---arm plunging down right from the sky, hence the name "Suspended--arm Great Wall".Walking along the wall you'll feel like walking on the ground when going over a flat part, while the steep part gives you a sense as though you were scaling up an abrupt slope. It looks very much like the steep part of the Great Wall at Badaling in Beijing so a poem in praise of it goes like this:
Along the ten thousand--li Walls feature passes of ten thousand,
From behind Black Mountain Peak sees a hidden arm suspend.
