Touming Mengke Glaciers in Subei County, Jiuquan City of Gansu Province: A sweet spring in the desert
The Touming Mengke Glaciers, the largest valley glacier in the Qilian Range, is 10.1 kilometers long and covers an area of 21.9 square kilometers. It can be found in Laohu Valley on the northern slope of Daxue Mountain in Subei County. Its main peak is 5,481 meters above sea level. In Mongolian, Touming Mengke means high and vast.
As Touming Mengke developed in an arid environment, it has the physical properties of a typical continental glacier. The glacier’s only loss of heat comes from evaporation and because it hardly melts, the glacier has changed little. Its stability is demonstrated by its average annual retreat of only 0.94 meter, estimated by movement of the glacier markers between 1985 and 2002.
