Yuantong Temple is located in Yuantong Street, with its back facing the south foot of Yuantong Mountain. It is one of the oldest temples in Kunming. The temple was built in Tang Dynasty and has over 1,200 years of history to date. Presently, it is also the biggest temple in Kunming. The temple is famous especially in southwest of China and Southeast Asia. Yunnan province and Kunming¡¯s Buddhism Association are all situated here.
Yuantong Temple¡¯s composition is very vague and unique and the porcelain statues are one of the key characteristics here. Yuantong Temple sits on the north and faces the south and is magnificent. Yuantong Palace is the center of the temple and there is a pond in front of it. There are cloisters on both sides leading round the pond to the opposite hall.
There are 3 Buddha statues made in Qing Dynasty in the palace. The two 10 meters high pillars are in the middle of the palace and both are engraved with a colorful dragon on it.
The 500 arhat statues were chiseled on the wall, and all of them are considered precious classics of the China temple. The copper statue of Sakyamuni in the temple was presented by the Buddhist masters from Thailand. The statue¡¯s height is 3.5 meters and the weight is 4 tons.
