The temple is highly regarded as the most famous Buddhist Temple in eastern Guangdong. Built in 738 AD during the Tang Dynasty, Kaiyuan Temple had a prototype modeling after the Dongdasi Temple in Nara of Japan. It is one of the four famous temples built in the Tang Dynasty and well preserved nowadays. Kaiyuan Temple has been playing an important role in the Buddhist history in China as it contains the complete Mahavira of Buddhist teaching.
The Kaiyuan Temple consists of several halls on the north-south axis: the Hall of Buddhist Warriors, the Hall of Heavenly Kings, the Mahavira Hall, the Guanyin Hall, the Hall of Sakyamuni, the Hall of Sutras, the Main Hall, the Shennong Hall and the Guest Hall. The buildings in the temple are full of architectural features from the Song and Ming Dynasties. There are many historical relics such as carved stones from the Tang Dynasty, bronze bells cast in the Song Dynasty, and a carved wooden Thousand- Buddha Pagoda from The Ming Dynasty. Besides, in the courtyard there are two linden trees and a pairs of stone statues featuring candles. It is said that the candles help carrying believers' prays directly to heaven.
