Han Yu (763-824), the great writer, thinker and politician of the Tang Dynasty was demoted to Chaozhou for 8 months. Though the period was short, Han Yu was highly regarded and appreciated here with his great contributions to local people. That is why many architectures and roads in Chaozhou are named after him. For example the most important river flowing through the centre of Chaozhou is called Hanjiang (Han River). Another example is the Han Yu Temple.

Han Yu Temple was originally built during the Song Dynasty (999AD) and 7 kilometres away from the south of Chaozhou city. The famous Song-Dynasty writer Su Shi once wrote and inscribed many famous sentences on the Temple's tablets in praise of Han Yu. As Han Yu used to visit the present site of the Temple and he planted an oak here, local people in 1189 relocated the original Temple to the present site.

Lying along the Hanjiang and at the western foot of Mt. Bijia, the temple is about one thousand years old. The staircase leading to the main gate of the hall has 51 steps, symbolizing the year when Han Yu was 51 years old when he demoted to Chaozhou. The temple is tranquil, accompanied by exquisite stone inscriptions and porcelain works. The oak tree planted by Han Yu himself was no long there. It is rewarding to visit the statue of Han Yu and 40 stone tablets bearing inscriptions by famous literati of different dynasties in the temple.
