On June 23rd 1925, over a hundred thousand on-strike Hongkong workers and Guangzhou people from all walks of life launched a large-scale demonstration here to protest against the May 30th massacre conducted in Shanghai by the Japanese and British imperialists. When the paraders were passing Shaji (where the 623 Road now is) on the opposite side of the Shamian concession, they were mowed down like grass by the guns of the French and the British troops. In the massacre 61 people were killed and more than 170 seriously wounded. This was the shocking ' Shaji Massacre'. In memory of this anti-imperialism movement, a monument was built on the eastern side of the West Shamian Bridge. Four characters ' 毋忘此日'(don’t forget this day)was engraved on the monument. In March 1963, the monument was listed as one of the conservation units of Guangzhou historical relics and upgraded to conservation unit of Guangdong historical relics in 1989.
