Linjin and Nanding Island in Zhangzhou City, Xiamen City of Fujian Province: Precious Legacy

Off southeast Fujian Province, in the Zhangzhou City coastal volcano scenic area, lie two magic volcanic islands, Linjin and Nanding. Though small---one 0.16 square kilometers and the other 0.07 square kilometers, they are both testimony to the movement of the earth. Studies by Chinese and foreign experts have confirmed that the islands represent the most complete and best preserved ancient volcanic geological resource: a great rarity.
The two islands were produced by repeated volcanic eruption during the Miocene Epoch, thus their basalt rock scenery, ancient volcanic craters, sea-eroded lava rocks, huge volcanic necks, basalt cones, terraces, cliffs and caves are of great research value in the study of geological structures, ancient volcanoes, ancient geology, earthquakes and earth structure. Then there are the remains of ancient forests buried for 8,000 years, and fabulous sandy beaches. In 2001, this place became one of China’s first batches of geological parks and the only marine volcanic park.
