Badaguan Scenic Area in Qingdao City of Shandong Province: Colonialist scenic legacy

This scenic spot gets the name for there are eight streets named after eight great passes in ancient China (Shanhai Pass, Jiayu Pass, Wusheng Pass, Ningwu Pass, Juyong Pass, Shao Pass, Zijing Pass, Zhengyang Pass). In fact, there are another two: Hangu Pass and Linhuai Pass. It has a distinctive architectural complex as the main scenery and quiet broad avenues. In spring and summer, flowers flourish like fire in all their bloom. In autumn and winter, you will witness frosted red maples. It has become a famous holiday resort in China.

The Badaguan Scenic Area, where the roads are named after ancient Chinese passes, is a concentration of modern architecture heritage. Its buildings, with pleasing proportions and diverse styles, are in perfect harmony with the surrounding environment.

On October 12, 1898, the German Kaiser Wilhelm II formally named the Jiao’ao Concession downtown area as Qingdao, and went on to apply to Qingdao the late 19th century’s mist advanced European city planning concepts. The Badaguan villa area was a result of that city planning. Imbued with foreign flavor, Badaguan, this 'museum of world architecture,' encompasses nearly a hundred villas in different styles.

Badaguan is a combination of garden and courtyard. French Candlenut in Shanhai-pass Street, Hangu-pass Street, and Wusheng-pass Street. Flowers are in blossoms all the year round; therefore, they are called 'Flower Streets'. Badaguan has a variety of architectural styles and thus is famous as 'the World Architecture Museum'. There are Huashi Villa, Princess Villa, Donhai Hotel and Badaguan Auditorium.
