Detail     Travel Diary     Comment

The park is situated at the tip of a peninsula on Touhu Lake of Wuxi City. It has got the name because the peninsula is shaped like a turtle's head. There is a large rock, whose front is carved with three characters "Yuan Tou Zhu" (Turtle Head Islet) and whose back with "Zhu Chun Tao" (islet spring waves). The cliff along the lack is carved with "Heng Yun" (flying cloud ) and "Bao Yun Wu Yue" (embodying the Wu and Yue areas), which is said to be the calligraphy of Liao Guan, Wuxi magistrate of the Qing Dynasty. Inside the park there are Chenglan Hall, Flying Cloud Pavilion, Sturdy Pine Building, Wanzi Building and other structures.

The kids are attracted to these big colourful kites sold by local people near the lake. We took some photos with these kites that we cannot find in our country.

Admission 70 RMB, student price 50 RMB (ouch!). Price includes the ferry ride to Sanshan (Three Hills) and back, and the silly tour "train" inside the park that saves you some walking. It's a long 1-hour public bus ride from town.

Yuantou Zhu or Turtle Head Isle is the principal Tai Hu pleasure spot and is certainly a relaxing place to stroll around. The area is basically a huge park, covering the northwestern end of the peninsula in the lake, is capped by a small lighthouse at the western tip, and scattered with tea houses and pavilions, former summerhouses of the wealthy. Neat paths lead up to a tea house, pavilion and pagoda giving views of tree-clad islands, winding inlets, fishing boats under sail and - if you are lucky enough to catch a sunny day - blue waters.
