St. Joseph's Cathedral (East Church) is one of the well-conserved religious sites located towards the east of central Wangfujing Street. It is, in fact, the second oldest Catholic Church in Beijing. The East Church was rebuilt in 1904 on the ruins of the burned Church.

The Church was originally called Saint Joseph's Church and was constructed in 1655 during Emperor Shunzhi period during the Qing Dynasty (1644 - 1911). The church occupies an area of 2387 square meters. Many trees and plants surround the Church, which was last renovated in the year 2004. In the night, the Church looks very beautiful with various lightings that were installed make the building look gorgeous at night.

The Saint Joseph's Church went through large-scale repair work before being made open to the Catholics in 1980. The structure is a beautiful blend of ancient western and Chinese architectural styles.

St. Joseph's Cathedral can be easily reached from anywhere in Beijing. You can take the line one subway to Wangfujing Station to reach St. Joseph's Cathedral. The church is about 500 meters north of the northwest station exit.

St. Joseph's Cathedral is the second Catholic Church built in Beijing. The first one being the South Church¡ located in southern Beijing, which was constructed at the end of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644).
