Changli Golden Beach in Changli County, Qinhuangdao City of Hebei Province: Where the desert meets the sea

The Changli Golden Beach lies in northeast Hebei Province. It was formed 2,000-3,000 years ago by sand brought by the Liugu River that empties into the Bohai Sea in neighboring Liaoning Province. Originating in the Yanshan Mountains that extend from northeast Beijing eastward to the Bohai Gulf, the river deposits huge quantities of silt into the sea, which drifts southwest with the current, driven by the strong northeasterly winds and piles up along the west coast of the gulf. The sand is then blown up by the northeast wind and after a short distance falls down on the beach, creating dunes.
In the slow process of accumulation down the ages, the dunes have got bigger and higher. The gentle sea-facing slope has a gradient of 6-8 degrees, whilst the steep escarpment on the other is 3—32 degrees. There are all together 40 chains of dunes, forming a rare landscape 30 kilometers long and 4 kilometers wide. The fine, glittering sand has earned the beach the accolade 'Golden Beach.'
The seashore is 28 kilometers long with clear and clean sea, sands, sandy hills and green seashore forest. The seaside has flat and soft sands without dirt. In the sunshine, it looks golden. The sea floor is filled with fine sand without reef or mud. Sea waves and winds have made a crooked moon-shaped sandy hill stretching far away. The sandy hill is 20-40 meters tall near the seashore. This sea of sands is as high as 50 meters and is an ideal place for sand skiing.
Emerald Island is located in Qilihai south of Golden Seashore, surrounded by seawater on their sides and with golden sandy hills behind. Many trees grow thick on the island and the sun cannot penetrate. It looks like an emerald on the sea, one-third of the species of birds in China perch on this island. Emerald Island is a national marine natural treasure, available for scientific activities, and of course for traveling and holidays.
