Xi'an Jiaotong University is a leading university directly administered by the State Education Commission of China. It enjoys a high reputation at home and abroad due to its long history and strong tradition. It grew out of Nan Yang College, which was founded in Shanghai in 1896. In 1921 it was given the name Jiaotong University,and then, in 1955, on the basis of the State Council's decision, the University moved inland to Xi'an. It was renamed Xi'an Jiaotong University in 1959.Xi'an Jiaotong University is situated on the ruins of Chang Le Fang which dates back to Tang dynasty, and it faces the site of the famous Xingqing Palace across the road. It has a building floor space of 670,000 square metres and a campus area of 133 hectare. The campus is attractively landscaped with trees and flowers.
