Yanji airport is located immediately to the south of the city. A new passenger terminal was completed in 1997 to meet international standards. The single runway was extended to 2,600 metres and can now accommodate aircraft up to the size of B-757. According to the ICAO airport classification system, Yanji airport is a level 4-D facility.
Passenger traffic has risen dramatically in recent years. Domestic flights doubled from 40 per week in 1995 to 80 per week in 1998. The new terminal has been designed to handle 1.4 million passengers each year with a peak capacity of 700-900 persons per hour. By the year 2005, the airport is expected to handle over 200 flights per week, including international flights from DPRK, Japan, ROK, and Russia. Charter flights to/from Seoul (ROK) and Vladivostok commenced in 2000 and 2001, respectively. Yanji airport is expected to be granted international status in the near future.
Yanji airport is capable of handling regional charter traffic from northern and southeastern Asia, and is likely to be upgraded to a full-fledged international airport in the near future. In 2001, Yanji airport carried 40,500 international visitors to Yanbian.
