Brief Intro: Opened in 1999 to replace the former Haikou Dayingshan Airport, Haikou Meilan International Airport has had an amazing growth of 13% in its annual passenger handling capacity. As one of the top ten busiest civil airports in China, it is capable of serving 9,300,000 passengers every year, with 4,016 per hour at its peak. Having been expanded during 2003-2005, it has one of the highest air traffic control towers in Asia (70.34m/231ft) and a specially designed terminal building which resembles the houses of the local Li people and covers 99,300 sq m (25 acres) to meet the capacity. Dense with greenery, the garden-like airport is also famed for its well-equipped facilities and first class services. It is now connected by 95 air routes to 56 cities - 9 of which are international.

Airport Lounges: Decorated with unique ornaments, carvings and brocades of the local Li people, the airport lounges provide not only considerate services but vivid representations of the local culture. Well located on both the Departures and the Arrivals Levels, the lounges are open for a charge of 150 Yuan per person.

Visa on Arrival: Passengers holding citizenship of the countries which have foreign relations or official trades with PRC can enjoy the facility of a Visa on Arrival (VOA) at Haikou International Airport. No-Visa policy with a validity of 15 days is available for travel groups of 5 or more members who hold passports of the 21 countries, i.e. USA, Singapore, Russia, Korea, Japan, Malaysia, Italy, Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia, Germany, UK, France, Austria, Switzerland, Sweden, Spain, Netherlands, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
Haikou Meilan Airport, 25 km (16 miles) away from the center of Haikou, provides a convenient connection between Haikou and other cities at home and abroad. It has more than 200 air lines flying between major cities inside China such as Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Shijiazhuang, Wuhan, Dalian, Xiamen, Xian, Chengdu, Harbin, Qingdao and Nanjing, etc., as well as direct flights to Hong Kong, Bangkok, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and so forth.
Haikou Meilan Airport (HMA) is 30 minutes ride from downtown by bus. A shuttle bus operates between the airport and downtown Haikou. It begins at 5: 30 each morning and runs until the last flight of the day. The bus fare is RMB 15 per person. China Southern Airlines and Hainan Airlines provide a free bus to the airport. The former starts at the gate of Civil Aviation Hotel on Haixiu Road while the latter starts at the building of the old airport. If you take a taxi to the airport, the fare is about RMB 30 - 40 after a bargain with the driver.
From HMA to Sanya City:
1.Hire a taxi at the price of RMB 300 - 400
2.Take a taxi to Haikou East Bus Station with RMB 50 -70, and then take the coach to Sanya with the price of RMB 79. Arriving at the Sanya Bus Station, it costs about RMB 50 to Yalong Bay, RMB 10 to Dadonghai and RMB 7 to downtown Sanya by taxi. Taxi fares are a little bit more expensive at night.
3.Take the shuttle bus from HMA to Haikou East Bus Station with a price of RMB 15. On arrival, take a minibus to Sanya which will cost RMB 30 -50, this bus makes frequent stops on its journey.
